Mum was interested in learning about other countries and keen to travel when circumstances and budget allowed. Mum and Dad were both interested in history and would take holidays together, but when he was not interested in visiting China, or on another occasion Russia, she did the tours with her sister, Joyce. Some notable trips:

  • Brussels World Fair 1958

  • the passion play at Oberammergau with TocH in 1960

  • Netherlands, 1968

  • In the 1970s Dad lead several pilgrimage group trips to Israel for a company, "Inter-Church Travel", and Mum went on at least one of these, visiting Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Masada, and many other sites.

  • Greece, 1981

  • New York and New England, 1988; Florida 1991 (visiting Dad's cousins); California 1994

  • When she was 70 Mum decided to take herself off to Toulouse to visit a pen-pal to whom she had been writing since her school days, but had never met

  • Tunisia, 1999

  • Berlin, 2000

  • Cruise around the Baltic Sea, 2001

  • China, 2002

  • A cruise to the Canary Islands was her 80th birthday treat from Dad in 2004

  • Tour of the western Canada and cruise to Alaska (2005)

  • Munster, Germany (2009) with Joyce to see Jutta, our au pair from 50 years before, and her family

  • In 2014 Mark and Michael took her to visit Monet's garden in France, a long-held ambition.

On one trip - to Brittany in 1999 - she fell badly and broke her pelvis and left elbow. The elbow was repaired by French surgeons and she was flown home. The pin they inserted into her arm caused no problems until 2019, when an infected sinus developed, which required surgery to remove the pin and a spell in hospital. The A&E doctors were shocked when an X-ray showed an embedded  piece of metal!
