In York Mum ran the Mothers Union at St Luke's church in Bootham and would take us boys to church there every Sunday. Dad was away a lot with his job.

For a while we had a German au pair, Jutta. Mum is still in touch with her.

Mum would sometimes drive us boys up to Newcastle to stay with her folks, and in the summer we often visited Dad's parents in the seaside town of Sheringham, Norfolk. While in York we acquired a puppy from a farm who we called Scamp, but it was Dad's dog really.

During our time in York Dad was the Lord Mayor's Chaplain for a year. Mum got to meet both the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret through this privilege.

Also Dad became a volunteer chaplain at York Minster, a role he continued to fill until his death in 2007.

Mum taught for a term at Mill Mount School in York but then Dad decided it was time to move on ...this time to become the vicar of St Peter's Church, Norton, in East Yorkshire. We moved in the summer of 1962.

Mum did all the cooking, which was a bit limited because Dad was a meat-and-two-veg man who could not abide onion or garlic. (Even the smell would make him ill!)

But she was proud of her roast dinners with Yorkshire puddings and did like to make a cake. Even in the later years, when you visited there were usually home baked biscuits and tray bakes in the cupboard.

In the garden Dad was in charge of lawns and the vegetable patch (though in York it was an allotment); Mum the flower beds. Dad was handy with a saw and screwdriver, but didn't get involved with housework much. They would do the wallpapering together when it was time to decorate.
