In 1974, after 12 years in Norton, the family (now down to four, as I'd graduated, married, and moved to the East Mildands) relocated to Wydale Hall near to Scarborough. Dad was to be the warden (basically the manager) of this retreat/conference centre owned by the Diocese of York.

The family had a first-floor flat in one wing of the building.

Mum carried on working part time in Malton, but was also heavily involved with the parish groups and others who came for retreats. The main building had some 30 beds, with more for youth groups in a substantial annex. Mum especially liked the Methodists because "we always sang hymns while doing the washing up".

After 9 years (1983) Dad was on the move again, back to parish life as the rector of Elvington near York. Mum's school closed, so she once more got fully involved in parish life, visiting in the three villages Dad looked after.

The same year Mum became a grandma for the first time; she was thrilled! (But after having 3 boys I think she would have liked a granddaughter!)

With an eye on their retirement Mum and Dad purchased their first house, a bungalow in York.

Mum gained a certificate to teach English as a Second Language and started teaching a young newly-arrived Pakistani lady, Alif Noor, in York, and got to know the family.
